1 Jn. 1:5-10 “Man is Sinful”
Yesterday we talked about the fact that God is good, that “God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” The contrasting truth is that man is sinful, tending to walk in darkness, lying and not practicing the truth
(1 Jn. 1:5-6). Verses 8 and 10 continue, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us…. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.”
The Old Testament also speaks of the sinfulness of man in Jere. 17:9.
“The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; who can know it?” In Rom. 3:8, Paul said, “There is none righteous, no not one, there is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God.
They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not one.” He goes on to say in verse 23, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
The bad news is that we are sinners and that there is a consequence for sin. The good news is that because Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, we can by faith experience everlasting life. A good verse with which to conclude is Rom. 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Have a great day!
