3/29/25 Matthew 4:19 “Fishing for Men”
“Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” According to Matthew 4:19, not only will we obey His commandments if we know Him and walk as He walked if we abide in Him (1 John 2:3, 6), but we will also fish for men. We will make evangelism a priority. Four steps are necessary in order to fish for men effectively.
Number one, we need to decide we are going to do it. Deciding to witness does not guarantee we will do so, but if we do not decide then we will probably not witness. We should tell others about Jesus because of God’s commandment, the Great Commission, and because we love people. Just as we sing “I have decided to follow Jesus”, we might need to sing “I have decided to fish for men.” Although if we are truly following Jesus, the natural result should be fishing for men.
Number two, we need to pray. Prayer makes a difference. Starting a list of people we think might need to be saved and praying for them every day can bring significant results, because God is able to do far more than we can ask or think.
Number three, we need to learn. The gospel is simple enough for a child to understand, but we should learn the basics and be able to present them. We should be very familiar with the bad news, the good news, and the necessity of faith.
Number four, we need to go make disciples. Or as some translate Matthew 28:19-20, as we are going we should make disciples. We all have plenty of opportunities to witness, if we just would take advantage of them. As we decide, pray, learn, and go, seeing family and friends and others trust Jesus Christ as Savior can be very exciting. Let’s just do it!
