3/14/25 John 1:35-37 “Jesus the Lamb of God”
The first connection that Andrew had with Jesus took place because of a statement made by John the Baptist. With two of his own disciples listening, John said, “Behold the Lamb of God.” Because of his statement, the two disciples followed Jesus. One of those disciples was Andrew.
According to John 1:29, the day before John had said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” The Old Testament mandated that the Jews sacrifice animals to secure forgiveness for their sins. Often the animal sacrificed was a lamb. In fact, each year the Jews celebrated Passover by eating a lamb, reminding them of the first Passover described in Exodus 12. A lamb was to be killed and some of its blood was to be put on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the house where they were going to eat the lamb. The Egyptians were about to experience the tenth plague, the death of the firstborn, but those who followed God’s instructions would be spared. In Exodus 12:13 the Lord said “when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.”
What the Israelites did not know at the time is that the Passover lamb looked ahead to the time when Jesus, the Lamb of God, would shed His blood as He died on the cross in order to pay the penalty for our sins and provide salvation for all who would believe. No wonder Andrew and his friend decided to investigate further, to learn more about this unusual man called Jesus.
