3/25/25 John 13:34-35 “Love God and Love Each Other”
A disciple should love God and love people. When Jesus was asked what was the greatest commandment in the Old Testament, He responded with the Great Commandment, love the Lord and love your neighbor. He reiterated loving your neighbor in John 13:34-35. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
The phrase “love one another” is repeated three times in two verses. Apparently Jesus thought horizontal love, with one another, is a very high priority. Too often we love very poorly, in our own households and in the church. But others will know we are disciples of Jesus Christ when we love well. In Philippians 1:9, Paul prayed that the love of the Philippians would “abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment.” Paul described the kind of live God wants us to have in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” If we claim to be disciples of Jesus, this is the kind of love we should have for one another.
