Following Jesus is what discipleship is all about; focusing on relationship that results in transformation. Knowing Jesus leads to obedience. John put it this way in 1 John 2:3. “Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.” Abiding in Christ brings Christlikeness, according to 1 John 2:6. “He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as he walked.” The more we behold Jesus Christ, the more we become like Him, as Paul notes in 2 Corinthians 3:18. “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” The better we know Jesus, the more like Him we can become. God is the one who works in us so that we can choose to do His will and have the strength to do it (Phil. 2:13). And we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Phil. 4:13).
