3/15/25 Romans 5:8 “God’s Great Love”
I wonder if Andrew gave much thought to Jesus being called the Lamb of God in John 1. Who would want to be referred to as a lamb? Who would want to be associated with being sacrificed? Who would want to give His life for the sake of others? Maybe the meaning of the phrase was being misunderstood.
However, the phrase given to Jesus did point to the ultimate sacrifice, the most significant sacrifice in all of existence. The Son of God became a man, humbling Himself and becoming obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross (Philippians 2:8). Why?
The answer is twofold. Number one, “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” We did not deserve salvation because of our sin, but God loved us so much He worked out a way for our fellowship with Him to be restored forever, through Jesus dying on the cross. Number two, Jesus is committed to God the Father’s will. He loves us as well, but He loves the Father and is determined to follow His will. He said in John 8:29, “I always do those things that please Him.” In the Garden of Gethsemane the night before His crucifixion, Jesus said “not My will, but Yours, be done.”
I wonder if Andrew, after Jesus died on the cross, thought back to the first time he met Jesus, who was called “the Lamb of God?” I wonder if Andrew understood and appreciated the great love of God the Father and the amazing submission of His Son?
