3/21/25 Luke 5:1-11 “Keep Following and Fishing”
Jesus had called Andrew, Peter, James, and John to follow Him. Various commentators believe Luke 5:1-11 describes a renewed call to follow Jesus. In Matthew 4:18 Andrew and Peter were casting their nets into the sea while in Luke 5 they were mending their nets. It is possible that the four fishermen had spent time following Jesus but had resumed their fishing. Jesus reinforced His call to follow Him with a miracle.
They had fished all night and had not caught a thing. Jesus asked Peter to move into deep water and cast their nets again. Peter knew that what Jesus asked was not in line with fishing common sense, and he also recognized that he would have to wash the nets again, but he obeyed Jesus. Peter and Andrew proceeded to catch a boatload of fish, in fact enough fish to start breaking their nets and sinking their boat as well as the boat of James and John. The disciples were astonished and even afraid, but at the encouragement of Jesus to focus on catching men, they forsook all and followed Him for good.
Ministry can be discouraging, but even when things do not seem to be going well, God can turn things around quickly. The key is to trust and obey, to keep on following Jesus and fishing for men.
