3/22/25 Luke 5:1-11 “The Miraculous”
Jesus had asked Peter to let Him teach the people from his boat in the Sea of Galilee. The water would have a microphone effect, and Peter would be a captive audience. Not that Peter had not heard Jesus speak and followed Him to some extent. A little while later Peter called Jesus Master, so he was already committed up to a point. But hearing Jesus teach and seeing Him at work was an amazing experience,
First Peter heard Jesus teach, a life changing encounter. Paul would later say in Romans 10:17, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Peter grew in faith and in Luke 5:11 was willing to obey Jesus and attempt to catch fish once more, even though he had fished all night and thought it was a lost cause. Genuine faith comes from God’s word and results in obedience; faith without works is dead (James 2:20). When Peter chose to trust and obey, he experienced God working in a mighty way. Because of all the fish, the nets almost broke and the boats almost sank.
Peter would witness many more miracles over the next three years or so, but this one might have hit home. He was an expert fishterman, but a carpenter put him to shame. Depending on Jesus is always a good idea. And Peter and his friends were willing to stop depending on themselves and their vocation and follow Jesus wholeheartedly. And God did great things! Should we not do the same! Should we not trust and obey?
