The proof that Jesus died was His burial. After a Roman soldier pierced Jesus’ side with a sword, confirming He was dead (John 19:34), Joseph from Arimathea requested His body from Pilate. According to Luke 23:53, “Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before.” Some of the women who had followed Jesus from Galilee noted where He was placed and then prepared spices and fragrant oils before resting on the Sabbath. They thought it was all over.

In spite of predictions by Jesus that He would suffer and die and rise from the dead, His disciples were not expecting what would take place on Sunday morning. Their dream of a reigning Messiah had been decimated. Their Saviour was in a tomb, and they were without hope. But God’s plan for Jesus did not end in the tomb. Whether the disciples realized it or not, Sunday was coming.
