Scripture

  • Matthew 28:18-20 “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Questions

  • What is the main imperative of the Great Commission?
  • What are the three actions that need to take place?

Thoughts

  • The Great Commandment was given by Jesus during His ministry, and we need to make sure that we are loving God and loving one another. The Great Commission was given after Jesus rose from the dead and before He ascended to heaven. In it Jesus commands the disciples to focus on making disciples, those who follow Him and learn from Him. The disciples were to make disciples by going and telling people about Jesus, baptizing them, and teaching them to obey Jesus’ words. We have the same responsibility.
  • Going is evangelism, meeting people where they are and sharing with them the gospel. Gospel means “good news”, and we need to tell others about the need for good news (sin and its consequences) and the message of good news (Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins so that if we believe we will have eternal life). Baptizing gives those saved an opportunity to proclaim that Jesus is their Savior and Lord. Teaching to observe Jesus’ commandments is just what it says.
  • The Great Commission is an extremely important aspect of church and the Christian life. We should be making a difference in the lives of others by sharing with them the life changing news about Jesus.

Action Items

    • Write down the name of at least one person whom you think might need Jesus (you can write down more).
    • Pray for that person or those people every day.
