4/5/25 Luke 14:7-11 “Which Seat Will You Take?”
Jesus humbled Himself, obeyed His Heavenly Father, and died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins (Philippians 2:8). Therefore, according to Philippians 2:9-11, “God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name … to the glory of God the Father.” Just as God exalted Jesus when He humbled Himself, so He exalts us when we humble ourselves. James puts it like this in James 4:10. “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” Peter exhorted his readers. “Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.”
The concept of humbling ourselves is contrary to popular culture today. It was in Jesus’ day as well. Jesus addressed the subject in Luke 14:7-11. He told a parable about being invited to a wedding feast. He exhorted them not to sit in the best seats because someone more important might come along and they would have to move to a lesser seat. Instead they should “go and sit down in the lowest place” with the possibility of the host promoting them to a better seat.
Jesus finished up with a statement in Luke 14:11 that we should all keep in mind. “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Jesus set the example for us and exhorts us to humble ourselves as well.
